01 Overview

About the Project

Proximity is a full-stack IoT solution combining custom hardware trackers installed on motorbikes and vehicles with a real-time tracking platform. The system provides live GPS positioning, route history, geofencing with instant alerts, speed monitoring, and comprehensive fleet analytics. Built for both individual vehicle owners and fleet operators in the Latin American market.

The Challenge

Vehicle theft is a significant concern across Latin America, and existing tracking solutions were either too expensive, unreliable, or lacked the real-time responsiveness needed. The team needed to build a platform that could handle thousands of concurrent device connections streaming GPS data at high frequency, process geofence boundary calculations in real-time, manage spotty cellular connectivity in rural areas, and present all this data in a responsive mobile app that felt instantaneous. The IoT hardware integration added complexity with varying device firmware versions, battery management, and cellular connectivity challenges.

02 Solution

Our Approach

We engineered a scalable event-driven architecture using message queues to ingest high-frequency GPS telemetry from thousands of trackers simultaneously. The backend processes geofence calculations and anomaly detection in real-time, pushing alerts to users within seconds of an event. The mobile application uses WebSocket connections for live map updates and falls back to polling when connectivity is limited. A custom device management layer handles firmware updates OTA, battery status monitoring, and connection health tracking. The system was designed for graceful degradation — devices buffer location data locally when cellular connectivity drops and batch-upload when reconnected.
